FAQ

What locations do you cover?

Central & Greater London. Arrangements can be made for projects that are beyond this radius and which require further travel.

How often should I test my smoke Alarms?

The 18th Edition wiring regulations suggests that both smoke and heat alarms should be tested monthly. Most smoke and heat alarms have a duration of 10 years before they should be replaced. The expiry label should be located on the outer shell of the unit or on the alarm head. Most smoke alarms use a 9v battery, if this needs replacing the alarm will randomly beep, indicating a change of battery is required.

My lights have stopped working, what should I do?

Check to see if a single light has gone off or multiple light points. It could be a case of changing the light bulb or low-voltage transformer if there are downlights. Assess the circuit breaker and RCD within the fuse board to see whether they have tripped. If they have tripped there is a fault. Another circuit in the fuse board could have also tripped the RCD. Try flicking switches on the lighting circuit in the opposite direction and see if the circuit breaker switches on at the fuse board. If problem persists Expert Electric recommend calling an electrician.

My RCD has tripped and won't reset, what should I do?

An RCD (Residual Current Device) gives additional protection to more than one circuit/breaker. When an RCD has tripped you will notice more than one circuit would have stopped working. Expert Electric recommend that all circuit breakers on the RCD side that have tripped are switched off. You can then reset the RCD. Turn each of the circuits on, until the RCD has tripped once more, this will indicate to you the faulty circuit. Call for an Electrician to carry out fault finding on the circuit.

What should I do if my power goes out?

Expert Electric recommend calling an electrician if the power outage is specific to your home or if there are signs of electrical damage or faults. An electrician can help identify and fix problems such as faulty wiring, a blown fuse, or a tripped circuit breaker. If you have an older home with outdated electrical systems, it might be prone to failures. An electrician can assess and upgrade your system to improve safety and reliability. For widespread power outages, report the issue to your electricity provider first.

Why do my lights flicker?

Lights can flicker due to various reasons, including a loose bulb or fixture, a faulty light switch, or a mismatch between dimmer switches and bulbs. Voltage fluctuations from large appliances, overloaded circuits, or faulty wiring can also cause flickering. Additionally, issues with the consumer unit, such as a faulty circuit breaker, and external problems with the utility service can be culprits. If troubleshooting these common causes doesn't resolve the issue, Expert Electric recommend consulting a professional electrician to ensure your electrical system's safety and functionality.

How often should I have an electrical inspection done?

Factors such as a change of occupancy, insurance purposes, a new property purchased or simply a new inspection for a previous expired report, can be reasons to request an electrical installation Condition Report. If you have a previous report, the date of next inspection should be shown on page 2 of this report. BS7671 also recommends certain time intervals for electrical installation conditions that are dependent on the type of installation or premises the report is for.

How can I save energy and reduce my electric bill?

To save energy and reduce your electric bill, upgrade to energy-efficient appliances and LED lighting. Improve home insulation, seal leaks, and install energy-efficient windows to maintain a stable indoor temperature. Practice energy-saving habits like turning off lights, unplugging electronics, washing clothes in cold water, and running full loads in dishwashers and washing machines. Additionally, consider installing solar panels to generate your own electricity. These steps can significantly cut your energy consumption and costs.
